Yangmingshan Attractions

The Yangmingshan area was originally known as Mt. Tsaoshan during the Japanese colonial authority. In honor of the Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yang-ming, the Yangmingshan Management Bureau renamed the area Yangmingshan in 1950. The park was officially established in 1985. Yangmingshan is well known for its hot springs.

The hot springs here are located within the scenic area of the Yangmingshan National Park, so that they are surrounded by enchanting scenery that makes this a fine spot for savoring the beauties of nature.

The hot spring water of Yangmingshan is mostly clear, but some of the springs produce a greenish water. It is effective in treating skin diseases, hardening of the arteries, and rheumatism. Most of these springs are concentrated on the western flank of Mt. Shamao, at Liuku and Qiku; there are a lot of places for bathing here, including the Yangmingshan hot-spring area, Coldwater Depression, Macao, and Gengziping. The water from these different places has different mineral contents, giving each spring its own distinctive features in terms of minerals, temperature, and medical effect.

The water of the Coldwater Depression, for example, is a milk-white in color and has a temperature lower than that of other hot springs in the Yangmingshan area--this is why the place is named Coldwater Depression--at about 40 degrees Celsius. It is said to be effective in treating chronic arthritis, muscular aches and pains, chronic skin diseases, anemia, diabetes, gout, and measles. The Macao hot springs come from the earth at a temperature of 70-75 degrees Celsius and are good for treating feminine ailments, diabetes, and gout; be careful, though, if you have excessive uric acid or bladder stones. The water of the Gengziping springs is even hotter--its temperature can be as high as 99 degrees--and is believed to be beneficial for chronic arthritis, muscular aches and pains, chronic skin diseases, gout, and syphilis; you should not bathe in this water, however, if you suffer from excessive uric acid, bladder stones, bladder inflammation, chronic gastritis, bronchitis, chronic hepatitis, or neuralgia.

In addition to the pleasures of hot-spring bathing, nearby areas of Yangminghan also offer enchanting scenery such as that at Chutzuhu Village, Chingtienkang, the Tatun Natural Park, the Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area, the Grass Mountain presidential house, and Yangmingshan Park. In these places you can feel the strong allure of the area's natural scenery and taste its special foods as well, including its Chinese cabbage, sweet potatoes, bamboo shoots, and hot-spring taro.

Chutzuhu Village:
This area was originally formed from a volcanic eruption. The lake formed over the years and cut through the valley hills. This lake water cultivated the soil and transformed this high altitude area into nourished farm land. Locals have been planting a variety of crops and vegetation in this area. Recently, profitable flowers have been the major choice of cultivation.

Tatun Natural Park:
This park is named afterthe second highest peak in Yangmingshan Park, Mt.Tatun (3,543 feet). Tatun Natural Park is a subset of Yangmingshan National Park in the western section of the area famous for its colorful variety of wildflowers , butterflies and uncommon trees, shrubs and grasses.

Hsiaoyukeng:
Hsiaoyoukeng Walking Area lies in the northern saddle of the Chihsing Mountain. It is one of the park's most geologically scenic areas. Strong acidic hot springs and sulfur gas rise through the Hsiaoyukeng fault and have eroded the extrusive rock throughout the years. The constant erosion caused the rock to crumble and collapse, resulting in the landscape we see today.

Menghuan Pond Waterplant Conservation Zone:

The floor of Menghuan Pond on Mt. Chihsing (elevation 850 meters or 2,789 feet is lined with a thick layer of humus soil. Among its many types of water plants, the pond is particularly noted for one rare type of submerged water fern: the Taiwan Isoetes. In order to protect this unique endangered species , Menghuan Pond has been listed into preservation.

Chingtienkang :

Flattened by the lava flow of previous eruptions throughout the years , Chingteingang is one of the pastures in Yangmingshan National Park noted by visitors as the best place for on outing in the area. The region was used as a cattle farm during the early Japanese era but is the best picnic place for tourists today.
